I've been creating on TikTok since 2022. The platform's algorithm has changed meaningfully enough that my 2022 strategy would perform differently today. Here is the current picture.

The For You Page Logic

TikTok's recommendation system is interest graph-based (what you interact with) rather than primarily social graph-based (who you follow). This means new accounts with no followers can reach large audiences immediately if the content matches interests the algorithm has identified in potential viewers. The flip side: follower counts mean less on TikTok than on other platforms — you can have 100,000 followers and get 2,000 views if your content no longer matches what your audience wants to see.

What the Algorithm Actually Measures

Completion rate is the primary signal — what percentage of viewers watch to the end. This is why opening hooks are critically important: the first 2–3 seconds determine whether someone scrolls or watches. Comments, shares, and saves signal strong audience response and boost distribution. Rewatches are a strong positive signal. The loop-ability of a video — content that naturally invites rewatching — is an underrated strategy for boosting these numbers.

The Trend-Original Balance

Participating in audio trends and format trends gives discoverability boosts by associating your content with currently active interest clusters. But trend content alone produces minimal follower growth because it doesn't signal what your channel is consistently about. The strategy that works: trending sounds/formats with original content within your niche. The trend provides reach; the originality provides retention and follows.

Production Quality in 2026

Production quality expectations on TikTok have risen from the raw, unpolished aesthetic that characterized the platform's early years. Casual isn't dead, but "casual" now means intentionally casual, not technically poor. Good lighting and clear audio are now baseline expectations rather than differentiators. The platform's audience has grown up and its content standards have followed.

Real talk: Completion rate first, everything else follows. Hook the first three seconds or lose them.
