Instagram Reels has changed significantly since its 2020 launch, and strategies that worked in 2021-2022 don't reliably work in 2026. After managing multiple accounts through these changes, the honest picture of what the algorithm currently rewards is clearer than it was — and more nuanced than most Reels advice acknowledges.

What the Algorithm Actually Measures in 2026

Instagram has confirmed that its Reels ranking system primarily uses engagement signals in the first 24-48 hours to determine distribution. The specific signals, in rough order of weight based on observed behavior and Meta's disclosed factors: watch percentage (how much of your Reel viewers watch), reshares (sending to friends via DM or Stories), saves, comments, and likes. Follower count is explicitly described by Instagram as a de-emphasized factor — Reels are designed to reach non-followers.
